Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital

 |
The Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital is the oldest established veterinary hospital in the Central Fraser Valley. It was opened in 1958 by Dr. Trevor Clarkson as the Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic and functioned primarily as a dairy practice. With the addition of Dr. Lon Goodale in 1961, the practice developed a small but steadily growing small animal clientele. Dr. Goodale remained a partner of Dr. Clarkson for several years before buying the practice from Dr. Clarkson in 1979. From its beginning in 1958 until June 1983, the practice occupied an 800 square foot facility across from the MSA Hospital on McCallum Road in Abbotsford. In June, 1983, the Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic moved three blocks north to its present two-story location at 33648 McDougall Avenue. The building required some renovation from its former use as an accounting firm office in order to make it functional as a modern veterinary facility. The name was changed to "The Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic and Hospital" to facilitate future division of the practice. |

A year later, Dr. Ken Macquisten assumed management responsibilities for the small animal portion of the practice. The practice was divided into two different practices: The Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic (a large animal out-patient clinic) and The Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital (a small animal hospital). Macquisten Veterinary Services Ltd. was established and purchased the Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital in 1986. The Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital occupies the main floor of the McDougall Avenue, for a total of 2800 square feet. The Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic, the large animal out-patient clinic, occupies the second floor of the building. Dr. Christine Foell began working in the practice in October, 1990, and subsequently purchased the practice from Dr. Macquisten a year later. The business name was changed to Foell Veterinary Services Ltd. Dr. Foell owned and managed the practice until her retirement in June 2004. The practice was sold at that time to Dr. Christopher Taylor. The legal name of the practice remains “Foell Veterinary Services”, but continues to do business under the familiar Abbotsford Veterinary Hospital banner. |
The building itself offers a large reception area, two large fully equipped examination rooms as well as one homey Client Room used primarily to allow for comfortable visiting hours and for private consultation and discussion, a large surgery suite, a spacious treatment room with a tub unit for bathing and dental procedures, a in-house laboratory area, a kennel area with stainless steel Shor-line kennels and a separate run area enclosing three runs with heated concrete floors, X-ray and separate developing room, and an isolation ward with contained ventilation for critical, yet contagious cases. Significant structural renovations were performed in 1999 and further recent, minor renovations and cosmetic changes have been made to the isolation ward , client room and reception area to upgrade the facility and give the building a more modern appearance. The hospital maintains anesthetic that continues to draw positive comments form clients, industry salespeople and other veterinarians. |
