We have a three-part province-wide tattoo
program in British Columbia.
First, the individual numerical designation
is assigned and recorded by the veterinary
hospital placing the tattoo.
Next, the hospital code is two pre-assigned
letters found on the following list.
Lastly, the years codes are the last letter
found in the tattoo code.
In the example above, 200
KM P "200" is for the individual animal.
"KM" is the code for the Hospital (Abbotsford Vet
Hospital) and "P" would be for the year (2004). The
right ear is the preferred site for the tattoo, but it is sometimes
placed in the flank. Tattoo codes that do not fit this
pattern may just be faded and illegible, or may be "breeder
tattooes" from the CKC or AKC.

All veterinarians and shelters in the province should be able
to identify an animal's number from the tattoo, and then it is a
simple matter of telephoning the facility on the list to obtain the
owner's phone number to start the process of returning the pet. If
for any reason the owner decides to move or give the pet to another
person the information needs to be changed with the hospital that
placed the tattoo on the pet. If the information is incorrect there
is no way of tracking an owner if their pet was ever found.
Please be sure to always update your contact
information with your original veterinarian when you
move!
